3 Tips For Improving Tempe Kids’ Attention Spans

Tuesday, February 25th, 2014

Glendale immunization schedule

Hello Arizona parents! Today in the Tempe Children’s Health Blog, we are going to look at various ways to lengthen kids’ attention spans. An increased attention span can improve learning ability as well as behavior and is an important aspect of kids health in Glendale.

1. Find an activity that will hold their attention. This might mean that you need to experiment with different types of toys and crafts. One child might enjoy building blocks while another may become engrossed in an art project. There are many craft and hobby stores in the Gilbert, Mesa, and Glendale area where parents can get great ideas.

2. Recorded stories are a wonderful resource for increasing attention spans. Have your child lie on the floor and close their eyes, then play a recorded story. When it’s finished, have your child retell the story to you. Local Phoenix libraries are perfect for finding recorded books and stories. Or you can download audio books for your iPad or other electronic reader.

3. Make sure that your child is using age-appropriate toys, crafts, and media. Age recommendations can be very helpful when deciding what activities will effectively engage your child.

Remember that it’s natural for different children to have varying attention spans, but the attention span of all kids should improve with age.

I’m Geneve Campbell and I am passionate about helping Arizona parents raise healthy and happy kids. I try to keep apprised on the latest in proper nutrition, childhood obesity, and immunizations. 3 Critical Toy Safety Rules For Tempe Parents

Friday, February 14th, 2014

Phoenix childrens vitamins

Between holidays and birthdays, there are plenty of opportunities for gift giving in the Phoenix area, so parents are often on the lookout for toys to give at the next big event. Toys can promote children’s health by stimulating the mind, encouraging imagination, or by getting kids moving around and exercising. But whatever toy you choose, make sure it is safe.

Next time you are browsing the toy aisle of your favorite Glendale, Mesa, or Gilbert department store, here are a few safety tips to keep in mind.

1. Be sure that you purchase toys that suit the child’s age and abilities. Buying a toy that is meant for older children is a possible safety hazard and should always be avoided.

2. Once you’ve chosen an age-appropriate toy, read all of the enclosed instructions before allowing your kids to play with it.

3. This can be difficult when you have children of differing ages, but you should always make sure that older kids play with toys containing small parts away from younger children, and never allow them to leave the game pieces unattended.

And, speaking of gifts, remember that ribbons and strings should be taken away immediately after a gift or toy is unwrapped.

My name is Geneve Campbell and I am passionate about kids health in Glendale. I want to help parents in and around Phoenix to raise healthy children and I do this by discussing important issues in my Children’s Health Blog, such as proper nutrition, immunization schedules, and safety.

Music is Magic for Tempe Kids

Tuesday, February 11th, 2014

Glendale immunization schedule

Parents in and around Tempe know that healthy kids need proper nutrition, lots of exercise, and well-rounded lives. It’s also safe to say that for all children, a well-rounded life should include music in one form or another.

Studies have shown that music does so much more than simply entertain!

Did you know that children who are involved in some kind of musical training during school perform better in math and science? They also develop better coordination, do better in reading, concentrating, and goal setting. Studies show that students who are involved in a music education program also perform better on their SATs, and are more likely to attend college.

While it’s ideal for Gilbert, Mesa, and Glendale parents to start their kids young, it is never too late to learn a musical instrument. Music stores in the Phoenix area will have great advice on age-appropriate music lessons and teachers for your curious child.

But lessons aren’t the only way! Keep an eye out in the Tempe community for musical events such as church, school, and community performance programs. Check with Gilbert, Mesa, and Glendale libraries, websites, and community centers for more information.

Keep up the good work, Tempe parents! Your children are lucky to have you to help them stay safe, healthy, and happy!

Keep Young Glendale Athletes Hydrated

Keep Young Glendale Athletes Hydrated

It’s important for kids to be active, but during times of prolonged exercise, especially during hot weather, Glendale kids can become dehydrated. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration, when your child says he’s thirsty, he may already be suffering from dehydration.

Ironically, swimming increases the risk of dehydration because water activities forestall feelings of thirst.

Encourage your Glendale child to drink extra fluids before an activity begins and continue drinking every 20 to 30 minutes during the course of the event. Try to schedule practices and games in the mornings or evenings, especially during the Glendale summer sports season to avoid the hottest part of the day.

Signs of dehydration can include:

dry mouth
lack of, or dark yellow, urine
cool, dry skin
lethargy, or irritability
dizziness
headaches

When treating a child for dehydration, water is best for the first hour or two, then sports drinks with electrolytes can be added. Most 85285 zip code area parks and ball fields are near convenience stores that carry Gatorade or Propel, but it’s best to keep a bottle or two in the car. If hydration is not restored, hurry to the nearest Tempe emergency room.

6 Fun Day-Off-School Activities For Glendale Kids

Thursday, January 23rd, 2014

Top Home Businesses In Gilbert

Most of the elementary schools in Phoenix seem to have more random days off than in years past. Sometimes these days can catch parents off guard. What to do when your kids are going to be home all day in the middle of the week?! Well, if you didn’t schedule appointments with your Tempe pediatrician or dentist for a check-up, then try one of these fun ideas to keep your kids active and healthy on their days off.

1. Help them make a treasure hunt, indoors our out, depending on the weather. Once they’re done they can invite friends over to find the treasure (the treasure can be almost anything, since the real prize is following the clues!). When the hunt is over, serve a small picnic for the hungry hunters.

2. Hold an art exhibit. Get out the paints and modeling clay and then let your kids spend the morning creating works of art to display.

3. Healthy kids are active kids, so help them plan a kid Olympics! Give them the freedom to choose how to judge and award medals, then sit back and watch them wear themselves out!

4. Have a family history day. Encourage your kids to write in their journals and ask them to share some favorite family stories that you can record in their own words. If you have stories of your ancestors, this is a good time to share them with your kids.

5. Go visit a local Glendale, Mesa, or Gilbert museum, historical site, petting zoo, or aquarium. Remember, this is a day to do something with your kids that you’ve always been putting off, so do it!

6. Visit a resident of a local Phoenix convalescent home. Some elderly men and women rarely get visitors. Your kids will feel good about brightening someone’s day. They could bring them flowers or an original piece of art. (See activity number 2.) My name is Geneve Campbell and I want to help Phoenix families to raise healthy, happy kids. Issues such as proper nutrition for children and childhood obesity in Gilbert concern me. I am the owner of a Phoenix area home business that sells nuggets.

3 Easy Ways For Tempe Kids to Get More Antioxidants

Friday, January 17th, 2014

Glendale kids shot schedule

Because antioxidants are associated with cell damage and cell death, parents in the Glendale, Mesa, and Gilbert area often mistakenly assume that antioxidants are only important for adults and the elderly, those with more visible cell death and damage. But that simply isn’t the case. Everyone needs antioxidants for their health, even kids.

Antioxidants work their magic by protecting cells from free radicals. Free radicals are a by-product of the normal metabolic processes that take place in everyone’s bodies (even kids!) all the time. Free radicals may also occur from pollutants, such as cigarette smoke, or when the body breaks down certain medicines.

Free radicals damage cells through oxidation. You might remember from chemistry class that this is the same process that causes an apple slice to turn brown. During oxidation in the cells, DNA can be damaged and changed, which can create the beginnings of disease. A chain reaction of damage can also occur with one damaged molecule becomes a free radical itself and then damages another, and so on.

Now that you know their importance, here are 3 great ways to get more antioxidants into your kids’ diets.

1. Get more veggies on their plates at dinner time and in their lunch boxes

2. Make fruit the snack of choice for your family

3. When buying processed snacks, choose those fortified with antioxidants.

Gilbert Kid’s Health: Guard Against Chapped Skin

Tuesday, January 14th, 2014

Gilbert Kids Health Guard Against Chapped Skin

When it comes to your Gilbert child’s health, you might first think of their diet. While putting vitamins and minerals inside your child’s body is important, you also need to pay attention to what is going on on the outside. I’m talking about your child’s skin.

The skin is our body’s largest organ and when skin’s smoothness is disrupted, small cracks and openings can create an entryway for bacteria and germs.

Active Gilbert kids don’t often think of the condition of their skin until it starts hurting. Playing outside in hot, cold, or dry weather can lead to small cracks around knuckles or nails. This painful condition is called dermatitis, or extreme dryness. Temperature extremes in Gilbert make it harder to keep skin moist and healthy – dry, chapped and cracked skin is common in summer and winter.

Many kids lick their lips until they turn red or bleed. Reminding your child to drink plenty of water can prevent over-dryness.  Using a humidifier during the night in your child’s bedroom can also help.

Make sure you leave moisturizing lip balm in handy locations: by their bed, the front door and in the car so reapplying it becomes habit. Remind them to slick some over their cuticles as well, to prevent cracking.

Mesa dermatologists suggest a using a daily skin moisturizer that contains shea butter and aloe to draw moisture into the skin and keep it in place.

Encourage Mesa kids to use waterproof gloves when playing outside in the cold. Lightweight gloves with grips added to the palms are great for playing ball and riding bikes. In addition to protecting skin from dryness, they keep small hands from slipping. You can pick these up at Arizona sporting good stores or Mesa big box stores.

Using a non-drying sanitizer is another way to prevent bacteria from entering through the skin. Look for brands that are alcohol-free to prevent excessive dryness.

“‘Don’t Worry Mom, I’m Saving The World!'”

Dont Worry Mom, Im Saving The World!

Phoenix parents: do you know what video games your kids are playing? If you haven’t looked through their games for a while, it’s probably time that you did. While playing rock band or sports games can be fun and entertaining, other games can be wrongly influencing your child with graphic violence and course language.

Some Tempe parents are unaware that many games have become more questionable when it comes to content. Many companies that sell violent games target their marketing at younger boys even though mature ratings specify seventeen and up. As with most forms of entertainment, the video game industry has continued down a slide of immorality and vulgarity.

Many Phoenix kids rationalize: ‘Oh, they don’t affect me,’ or, ‘It’s just a shooting game,’ or ‘I’m only killing zombies,’ or, ‘I can turn the blood off.’

I believe that many Phoenix kids are being desensitized by very graphic portrayals of violence and criminal behavior.
Especially if they play hours on end.

Video games with the mature rating have become as bad or worse then R rated films. It is up to Tempe parents to monitor their children’s game purchases and decide what is and what isn’t allowed.

If your son or daughter wants to play questionable games, discuss the content and explain why you object. Show concern for your kids by monitoring their games and limiting their playing time. Remember that video games, like other leisurely pastimes, can interfere with school.

I know some Tempe parents who have hidden the gaming controllers because their child kept sneaking improper games into the house.

This Arizona children’s health blog is dedicated to Phoenix parents who are trying to raise physically and emotionally healthy children. I own a successful home business that features a unique line of super-healthy kids snacks. To order XProtein Meal Shake, call me today!

4 Things Your Tempe Pediatrician Wants You To Know

Thursday, January 2nd, 2014

Glendale Kids Vitamins

The health of their children is a top priority for parents in the Glendale, Mesa, and Gilbert areas, and that’s why having a good relationship with your child’s pediatrician is important. From well-child check-ups to children’s immunizations to flu shots, these healthcare providers are there when parents need them.

Today in the Tempe Children’s Health Blog, we want to give you a look into some of the issues facing pediatricians, especially those issues that they may have difficulty discussing with parents.

1. A cold is a cold is a cold, even if they call it something different. There are lots of names for the common cold, like “viral rhinosinusitis” or “purulent rhinitis”. They might sound fancy, but if your kids has it, it really just means they have a cold. Many pediatricians use these terms so parents don’t feel like their being sent away from the office with an overly-simple diagnosis.

2. Old wives’ tales and internet health sites are no substitutes for professional medical advice! There are many rumors that have no scientific basis, but some patients insist on bringing their child in because an older member of the family noticed something (think green snot or ear tugging). Also, while the internet is filled with great information, it is also teeming with sensationalized and nonscientific sites that can be downright dangerous. Pediatricians just want parents to be safe and well-informed when choosing how to treat their child.

3. Fevers are scary, but for children over 3 months old, there is no magic number where a fever becomes dangerous. However, accompanying symptoms like lethargy, rash, or inconsolable crying are cause for concern.

4. Scheduling is not an exact science.
No one likes to camp out in the waiting room, but, once in a while, a patient requires a little extra care, and this can throw the schedule off for the day. However, one day that patient may be your child, and you’ll want that schedule-ruining extra care as well.

How Does Nature Make Glendale Kids Happier?

Saturday, December 21st, 2013

Glendale kids shot schedule

Hello Tempe parents! Welcome the the Phoenix Kid’s Health Blog. I’m sure most of you know how important it is for your kids health to spend time outdoors each and every day. But it may be even more important than you think.

Just like proper nutrition, immunizations, and vitamins, getting outside is essential for your child’s health.

One reason if for the natural light of the outdoors. This natural light keeps kids alert and healthy. Also, exposure to this light in the morning has a way of setting children’s internal clocks to promote better sleep and earlier bedtimes. (And what Gilbert parent doesn’t want earlier bedtimes?!) Another reason is that nature soothes and comforts children in safe, healthy ways. Studies have shown that children have better ability to focus with increased time outdoors. This will translate to more productive learning time as well as more tranquility in the home. Lastly, outdoor exercise is superior to indoor exercise because it promotes more physically vigorous play like jumping, running, and tumbling. These are all of the things that Mesa area parents are always telling their kids to stop doing in the living room!

Arrange your family’s schedule so that your children have time to explore the Tempe outdoors, and everyone will be better for it!

My name is Geneve Campbell and I want to help Tempe families to raise healthy, happy kids. I am the owner of a Phoenix area home business that sells nuggets. If you are interested in learning more, visit my web site at http://www.livebychocolatetoday.com or give me a call at 801-318-0001.
